Set in an early New England colony, the novel shows the consequences that a single act has on the lives of three members of the community: the independent and defiant Hester Prynn; her guilt-ravaged lover Reverend Dimmesdale; and the obsessed Chillingworth - Hester Prynn's husband who, once presumed dead, now returns to exact revenge.
